New Year, Fresh Start: Tips to Stay Organized All Year Long
New year’s resolutions are everywhere this January. From eating healthier, exercising more, losing weight, or saving money it seems like someone around you has something they are working on.
In case you haven’t selected one yet, or are open to the idea of adding one more, we suggest the new years resolution of keeping your home organized for the coming year.
While this may seem like a daunting task, we have some tips to help you start organizing your home and to keep it organized all year long to give your space a nice, refreshing start to 2025.
1. Start Small
Don’t try to tackle the entire house at once. Begin with a single closet, a corner, or even a drawer to help prevent overwhelming yourself with the process of organizing your things.
2. Declutter
We know, you’ve heard about decluttering a million times before, but it is an essential part when it comes to the initial steps of organizing your home and should be completed periodically to ensure that you are keeping only what currently serves you and your household. We recommend using the “keep, donate, discard” method to start soriting items. It is a fairly self-explanatory method when it comes down to it. Put all items you intend to keep in one pile, those that can be donated in another, and discard any that you don’t want to keep and cannot be donated.
3. Categorize Items
Once you know which items you intend to keep, start categorizing them by use. This will help you make sure that everything has a place to go within your space and that you know where everything is. For example, put all office supplies together into one space, blankets, and linens in another, etc.
4. Maximize Storage Space
Make use of dividers, bins, and closet systems to take advantage of your space in a way that reduces clutter and makes your space more functional. Consider multifunctional furniture that features storage to save space.
5. Find Everything A Home
When putting all of your items away, make sure they all have a space, or home to go back to. Remember those office supplies we talked about earlier? Make sure they all have a specific space within your home office. Pens always go back into the pen holder to make sure they’re easily accessible and you know where they are the next time you need them. As you are finding a home for all of your items, make sure the ones you use most are easily accessible to ensure that your home works with you and not against you. This will look different for everyone, as no two people live the exact same lifestyle. For some, it may include a labeling system to make sure everything goes back to it’s space. For others, it may be color-coding items to identify which person in the family they belong to.
6. Establish Cleaning Habits
Establish good cleaning habits. To accompany your organization system. Following your big organization project, you should invest in a deep cleaning for your home to clean all of the nooks and crannies you exposed while organizing. We can help with that initial deep cleaning service, as it is a part of our residential cleaning services. Following this deep cleaning, we can set up monthly, bi-weekly-or weekly maintenance cleaning to ensure that your home is happy and healthy. Along with these cleaning habits, we recommend to re-visit your organization system and do a small de-cluttering session quarterly. This will help keep your seasonal items included in your organization system and to make sure that it is serving your current needs.
